Few in the scientific community would debate Darwinian theory, but evolution is far from universally accepted among the public at large. While 87% of scientists say humans and other living things have evolved as the result of processes such as natural selection, only a third of the public agrees. Another 22% of the public say humans have evolved, but “a supreme being guided the evolution of living things for the purpose of creating humans and other life in the form it exists today.” Three-in-ten Americans say humans and other living things have existed in their present form since the beginning of time, a belief shared by only 2% of scientists. Younger adults, ages 18 to 29 (40%), and the college educated (45%) are the most likely to believe in evolution, but in neither group does a majority agree.
