25 of 25 - Widespread Economic Nationalism
In all 25 of the countries included in the 2009 Pew Global Attitudes Survey, majorities ranging from 75% in France to 95% in Lebanon mostly or completely agree that their government should take steps to protect their nation's economy even if other allies object. In 11 of these nations majorities completely agree with this statement. Economic nationalism is somewhat less intense among European Union members -- just 30% of Germans completely agree, along with fewer than half in France (33%), Spain (36%), Poland (41%) and Britain (46%) -- as well as in the U.S. (45%) and Canada (34%). Large percentages across the globe also believe that their country needs to be protected against foreign influence and most favor greater restrictions and control on immigration. Read more
