Green originally joined the Forum in 2005 and he will continue to serve as a senior fellow in religion and American politics. He is taking a one-year leave of absence from the University of Akron in Akron, Ohio, where he has been the director of the Ray C. Bliss Institute of Applied Politics and a Distinguished Professor of Political Science. During the 2005-06 academic year, Green lived and worked in Ohio while jointly serving the Pew Forum and the University of Akron.
“This move puts me in the nation’s capital at a time when religion is having a profound impact on politics in this country and around the world,” said Green. “It also places me closer to many of the journalists I have enjoyed talking to over the years.”
Green has done extensive research on religion and American politics, and he has enjoyed a long association with the Pew Forum and other projects supported by The Pew Charitable Trusts. Since 1990, the Trusts have supported Green’s widely cited surveys, conducted in presidential election years, on the political fault lines running through America’s religious landscape.
Green is co-editor of The Values Campaign? The Christian Right and the 2004 Elections (Georgetown University Press, 2006). He is also co-author of The Diminishing Divide: Religion’s Changing Role in American Politics (Brookings Institution Press, 2000), The Bully Pulpit: The Politics of Protestant Clergy (University Press of Kansas, 1997) and Religion and the Culture Wars (Rowman & Littlefied, 1996). In addition, he has published more than 60 scholarly articles and more than 35 essays in the popular press.
Green received his Ph.D. in Political Science from Cornell University in 1983 and his B.A. in Economics from the University of Colorado in 1975.
